About Us at Spanish Peaks Alpacas...
Judy
and Will retired from their careers and moved from Denver to
La Veta in 1998. Will had been a postal employee and Judy
a special education teacher and school psychologist. Looking
for a smaller, quieter community, we followed a sign for the Scenic
Highway of Legends and followed the route through some of the most
beautiful mountain scenery in Colorado. Coming into La Veta,
we decided that (to paraphrase Col. John Francisco, the founder
of La Veta) “this was paradise enough for us”.
In
Feb., 1998, we completed our alpaca pens, and in April, our strawbale
house. Fulfilling a lifelong dream to live on a farm, Judy
had purchased 2 female alpacas, which were finally able to join
us along with a cria (baby alpaca) who had been born in the meantime.
We added 2 Akbash dogs and 2 barn cats, and after some time and
effort have established a functional four-legged family in which
each species does its job and all get along very well. Living
in a mountain community where bears, mountain lions, coyotes,
and domestic dogs pose a safety threat to alpacas, our livestock
guardian dogs are essential and have become cherished members
of the family.
One
of the best fringe benefits to raising alpacas has been getting
to know fellow alpaca breeders, among them, some of the nicest
people we’ve encountered. Learning about alpacas and their
care, attending shows, fairs, workshops, sharing a mutual passion
with members of the alpaca community, is fun, stimulating, and
invigorating. Working with the luxurious alpaca fiber is
a joy and pleasure. Spinning, felting, knitting, and producing
beautiful finished products from our own animals, “homegrown,
hand spun, hand knit”, what satisfaction there has been
in this.
Alpacas
are a very special gift to the world
and a
pleasure to share.
We invite
you to share in this joy!
